The West Yorkshire Central Services Agency provides information on these primary healthcare services in Leeds and is also responsible for issuing medical cards to new residents. £720 million was spent on healthcare in Leeds in 2000/2001. This funded 200,000 attendances at A & E departments, 61,000 emergency ambulance journeys, the delivery of 8,500 babies, and many other services.

Medical centres
A world class medical centre has been formed in Leeds following the merger of the city’s two hospital trusts, St James’s University Hospital NHS Trust (made famous by the Jimmy’s TV series) and the United Leeds Hospitals Trust. The new Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is a world leader in the treatment of liver and kidney disease, has an international reputation for cancer care and is one of the biggest centres for cardiac care in Europe.

There are several smaller independent hospitals in Leeds, including the brand new £41 million Nuffield Hospital located in the city centre. These offer a range of healthcare services from basic nursing to complex surgery. Most are recognised by the large medical insurance companies such as BUPA and PPP.

Hospital services
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust provides a full range of hospital services delivered through six sites spread around the city. The trust employs 15,000 staff, has 3000 hospital beds, and an annual budget in the region of £600 million. Two of the sites offer accident and emergency services and one offers a minor injuries service.

Community health services including family health care, district nurses, services for people with learning disabilities and mental health services are delivered through five primary care trusts.

Dental centres
There are 274 NHS dentists, some of whom are still accepting new NHS patients. Leeds Dental Institute provides the region with a high level of clinical treatment and is one of Britain’s most innovative centres for dental care and research.
